Lachlan

There was no sense in sugarcoating it, even if it was only to the haunted man inside.

I’d made a decision.

It wasn’t necessarily one I’d come to lightly and if I told anyone else at this point, my partners included, they’d call me mad. Or worse. Grant and Jameson knew me better than anyone, certainly more so than my own family. However, the distance between us had allowed me to keep a veiled existence of myself intact during business meetings in person.

Outwardly, I seemed as cold and calculating as I’d always been, enjoying total control. Once behind the locked doors of my house, everything was entirely different, encompassing strong emotions. The love of life I’d always had was no longer a part of my existence.

Maybe I was to blame, not only because of what had occurred with Morgan. Only Jameson had managed to see through my thin façade, quietly questioning me from his perch of goodness. Hell, the man didn’t have a fucking speeding ticket to his name. I was the lead foot, easily able to get off without receiving a ticket every time. And why? Because the chief of police was in my pocket, and everyone knew I was king of the hill.

I took a sip of scotch, watching Lark as intently as I’d done at the club. As soon as the session was over, I’d whisked her out my private entrance, determined no one was going to bask in her beauty, let alone believe they had a chance with her. She was mine.

The decision was final.

Whether or not she believed I had a powerful hold over her was of no consequence. There would be no end to the contract, only an entirely different continuation. My sweet Lark would never be allowed to escape.

Which is why additional rules were required.

I crossed one leg over the other, my ankle resting on my knee, the position allowing me to swirl my rocks glass as I thought about how to approach the next path the two of us would head down. There was no mistaking she was a formidable woman, but as soon as it was widely known I’d claimed her, others would try to interfere, including her father. Not only that, but she could also be used as a pawn against me. I wasn’t a man known for hesitation, which is why I found it interesting I was coddling her with kid gloves.

Maybe because I cared more than I wanted to admit.

“We should talk,” I told her. She was beautiful beyond measure, but the way she sat on the couch with her bare legs under her, a glass of wine in her hand was more attractive than seeing her tied to the cross. Although the experience had been delicious, more so than I’d believed it could be. More important, she’d placed her trust in me. Perhaps it would be short-lived, especially after my updated demands.
